Are you installing an extension, renovating a property or building a new build home? If you are, you may be considering installing underfloor heating. However, you may have some questions. Namely will it be suitable for the type of flooring you want to lay over it? How much does it cost? And can it save you money on heating bills? In this article we answer some of your most frequently asked questions.
So here are the main things you need to know;
There are two types of underfloor heating that you can choose from – electric and hot water. Although electric can be sometimes cheaper to install, hot water underfloor heating will be more efficient, so it’s worth the investment. Hot water underfloor heating is also more efficient to run than standard radiators and can solve the problem of taking up valuable wall space making it more aesthetically pleasing on the eye.
Here at TASC we specialise in hot water underfloor heating. We have various system floor build ups to suit all our customers’ needs from 18mm build up through to more recognised systems over insulation with screeds.
What rooms can I have underfloor heating in?
Underfloor heating can be installed in all rooms in a home. You can use any type of floor covering too. At TASC we design your floor outputs and balance your system to cater for each floor covering, be it your highly conductive floor tiles in the bathroom, or your plush new carpet in your living room.
Can I use my existing boiler?
Underfloor heating is generally compatible with most boilers, however in the case where you are renovating an existing property we will provide you the additional heat load required for your system to see if it’s within your boilers capacity.
When building a new home, it’s worth considering installing a ground or air source heat pump. These heat pumps run at much lower temperatures which is ideal for underfloor heating systems, and are more environmentally friendly too. Here at TASC we are specialists in installing ground and air source heat pumps, so we can advise accordingly if you want to consider this type of heating source. You can also benefit from the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) which is a government scheme that pays out quarterly over a 7 year period for people who have heat pumps installed by approved installers. This can pay out between £180 – £1400 per year depending on the size of your property so it’s certainly worth considering this type of heat system. These figures are based on air source heat pumps. Ground source heat pumps generally pay out more!
TASC is proud to be approved by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MSC) which is a vigorous, yearly audited process allowing us to pass RHI discounts onto our customers. With Government legislation coming into force in 2025 debunking Gas boilers from being installed in new builds, get ahead of the pack now with a renewable heat source.
